In the first English-language episode of our podcast, I speak with a Ukrainian sociologist working at the Freie Universität in Berlin. Volodymyr Ishchenko is one of the most interesting commentators and analysts of Ukraine's recent history and the ongoing war in this country. He is also a leftist, anti-war, anti-imperialist, and universalist thinker, which makes his interpretations always surprising and fresh especially in the context of the increasingly shrinking public debate in Poland and the West more broadly.

Volodymyr Ishchenko is a research associate at the Institute of East European Studies, Freie Universität Berlin. He defended a doctoral thesis in sociology at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Ukraine). In Ukraine, he lectured at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and Kyiv Polytechnic Institute as well as initiated and supervised "Ukrainian Protest and Coercion Data" project. His research focused on protests and social movements, revolutions, radicalization, right and left politics, nationalism, civil society. He authored many peer-reviewed articles and interviews on contemporary Ukrainian politics, the Euromaidan revolution, and the following war in 2013-14 published in "Post-Soviet Affairs", "Globalizations", "New Left Review", among other journals. He has been a prominent contributor to "The Guardian" and "Jacobin". In 2024 he published a book "Towards the Abyss: Ukraine from Maidan to War" (Verso Books).
